In recent years, the rapid development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) have become key to corporate competition. However, a professor from Stanford University presented a unique perspective at the recent World Economic Forum in Davos. He believes that AI should be used to complement rather than completely replace human employees.
Erik Brynjolfsson, the head of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab and a professor, shared his insights at the conference. Brynjolfsson, co-author of the 2011 book "Race Against the Machine," has a deep understanding of the future trends of AI.
In his speech, Brynjolfsson emphasized that AI technology should be integrated with human labor since certain tasks are more suitable for humans, while others can be more efficiently performed by machines. He demonstrated how generative AI can be used to improve employee work efficiency through a case study in a call center, showing that within just a few months, employee productivity increased by an average of about 14%.
Brynjolfsson further noted that successful companies can efficiently utilize AI because they understand the importance of allowing human employees and machines to each play to their strengths. He mentioned that while some companies choose to cut jobs when implementing AI technology, others use AI to enhance the capabilities of their existing workforce. For example, Deloitte uses AI technology to assess employees' skills and help them transition to more in-demand positions, thereby avoiding layoffs.
Brynjolfsson concluded that in the face of AI technology, companies can choose to see it as a competitor, attempting to replace humans with machines, but this strategy may ultimately fail. On the contrary, using AI as a complement to human work will enable companies to achieve greater productivity gains in the future market.
