Microsoft recently unveiled an expansion of its Copilot virtual assistant service, now accessible to small businesses and Microsoft 365 consumer subscribers. This initiative is part of Microsoft's broader strategy to engage more customers with generative artificial intelligence, a technology popularized by OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, which generates natural-sounding text from brief user commands. This expansion could help offset the costs of developing AI-supportive data center infrastructure.

Despite facing stiff competition from giants like Amazon and Google, investors remain optimistic about Microsoft's potential in the AI domain. CEO Satya Nadella has emphasized AI's central role in Microsoft's identity, declaring the company as "the Copilot company." Since November last year, Microsoft has been offering Copilot services based on OpenAI's large language models to large enterprises and educational institutions, with an additional $30 per month charge.
Yusuf Mehdi, head of Microsoft's Windows and Surface division, stated that small businesses subscribing to Microsoft 365 Business Premium and Standard can now register for up to 299 Copilot licenses at $30 per person per month. Additionally, Microsoft has lifted the 300-seat minimum for commercial plans in place since last November, extending Copilot's availability to users of Office 365 E3 or E5 plans.
For individual users, Microsoft introduced the Copilot Pro add-on, priced at $20 per person per month. Subscribers to Copilot Pro gain priority access to the latest AI models, including OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo, and the ability to use cutting-edge models during peak times and create custom chatbots.
These updates reflect Microsoft's advancement in AI integration and market competition, aiming to fulfill its vision of being a leading Copilot company. With these developments, Microsoft not only enables customers to experience the latest AI technologies but also strengthens its position in the tech market, offering efficient and innovative tools for businesses and individuals.
