Apple is recruiting a senior engineer to create a television and sports app for Android, indicating the company's intention to bring its TV+ service to the competing smartphone platform. In a job advertisement, Apple stated its need for someone to spearhead the development of "engaging new features" and "assist in building an app that millions use to watch and discover TV and sports content." This suggests that Apple aims to expand its video streaming market share by putting aside its rivalry with Android and attracting more users. It is uncommon for Apple to develop software for Google's Android, which competes with its iOS platform. Apple's TV+ service, launched in 2019, competes with Netflix and Disney+ and has invested heavily in original content, but the company has never disclosed the number of subscribers or revenue generated by the service.

Android represents a significant pool of potential viewers for Apple's TV+ service. While Apple dominates the high-end smartphone market, Android has a larger global user base, powering over 3 billion devices worldwide. Apple, with approximately 2.2 billion active devices, mainly comprising iPhones, has long aimed to make TV+ available on multiple platforms, including smart TVs, Roku, Amazon streaming devices, and game consoles, but initially refrained from releasing an Android app. Apple has offered its music streaming service on Android but has declined to launch other apps like FaceTime and iMessage due to concerns that making popular features available on Android could threaten iPhone sales.

However, TV+ is not entirely new to Android, as Apple has offered the service on Google Chromecast streaming devices and many smart TVs running on the Android operating system. The recent job listing indicates that Apple is now planning a more comprehensive Android app, asking applicants to "design and architect a sophisticated application." This move signals a potential shift in Apple's approach, as it has also released standalone versions of its Music, TV, and device-management apps for Windows. As it increasingly relies on services for revenue growth, Apple has also raised the price of TV+ to $9.99 per month, double the initial price when it launched five years ago.
