Apple has unveiled plans for an on-device AI system for future iPhones that anyone can utilize. Typically, AI runs on large server farms, consuming significant electricity and posing privacy risks. However, Apple aims to keep user data private on iPhones as much as possible. With these new libraries, Apple demonstrates how users can enjoy the benefits of cloud-based AI while maintaining privacy. Professor Benjamin Lee of the University of Pennsylvania explained that on-device AI models are smaller, require fewer calculations, provide faster responses, consume less energy, and enhance user privacy by not transmitting data to the cloud. This approach could transform consumer electronics experiences.

Artificial intelligence is essentially a highly efficient predictor. When tasked with writing a book report that someone intends to submit as their own work, an AI generates it letter by letter, predicting which letter should follow based on its training. Similarly, when it generates images, it predicts which pixel should come next until it creates a complete picture of, say, a shrimp deity.

While this may seem astonishingly improbable, we have all witnessed the results, proving that it is indeed possible. The crucial element is the training process. To create a large language model (LLM), a neural network is trained by feeding it vast amounts of images (or text). As the computer analyzes this material, it identifies patterns. Humans may assist in this process by indicating which images contain, for instance, bridges or bicycles.

The outcome is a complex mix of simple mathematical equations that encapsulate the entirety of the training data. Related words are grouped together in a high-dimensional space, which may be difficult for us to visualize but is easily manageable for a computer.

To utilize the LLM for writing a term paper, you simply provide a description. The machine leverages its trained model to interpret this input and generate the desired output.

While training the model requires immense computing power, once it is completed, it can be implemented on standard computers. Furthermore, by reducing the model's size, it may lose some capabilities but can be executed on smaller devices with less power consumption.

This brings us to Apple's OpenELM models, specifically designed to operate on iPhones. A complete model can encompass trillions of parameters, but Apple offers scaled-down versions with varying parameter counts, from 270 million to 3 billion. The more parameters, the more proficient the model becomes at AI tasks.

Why is this significant? It enables Apple to deploy AI on devices with relatively limited computing power and battery life. By optimizing the models for specific applications, they can be made smaller and more efficient. Additionally, Apple can tailor its models to run on the Neural Engine, a hardware feature present in Macs and iPhones for years.

For instance, the Neural Engine handles iPhone camera processing, allowing it to recognize people, blur backgrounds, combine images for HDR and portrait modes, and more. It also enables the Photos app to identify family members, even when they are partially obscured. All these capabilities are achieved in fractions of a second due to the synergy between hardware and software.

Operating optimized AI directly on a device offers numerous benefits. One key advantage is power efficiency, though the initial training of these models still consumes significant electricity. Another crucial aspect is privacy, as many tasks can be performed without the need to communicate with a remote server. Additionally, on-device AI provides autonomy, enabling users to perform various tasks without requiring an internet connection. Take, for instance, the way Apple manages photos on its devices. All the processing, including person recognition, is done locally without sending images to Apple's servers.

Jiahao Sun, the founder and CEO of Flock.io, a machine learning company, explains that on-device AI tends to be more energy-efficient than cloud-based AI, as it minimizes the necessity for data transmission over networks. Narrowly focused tasks, such as those demonstrated in the photo examples discussed in this article, are excellent applications for AI or traditional machine learning. For instance, improving Siri does not require the full capabilities of ChatGPT, and on-device AI has been powering predictive spell check since the introduction of iOS 17.
