On Wednesday, Electronic Arts (EA) disclosed a part of its plan that involves downsizing its workforce by 5%, which includes reducing its office space and discontinuing the development of certain game projects.
According to EA's most recent annual report submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in May, the company employed 13,400 people as of the end of March 2023. This suggests that approximately 670 positions could be impacted by this reduction.

This announcement is the latest in a series of workforce reductions within the gaming development sector in recent months, reflecting a wider trend of significant downsizing across the tech industry.
Following the announcement, Sony revealed plans to cut about 900 jobs in its PlayStation division, which represents 8% of its total workforce. Last month, Microsoft announced the elimination of 1,900 jobs in its gaming division three months after acquiring Activision Blizzard, while Tencent's Riot Games reduced its workforce by 11%.
In a memo sent to employees on Wednesday, EA CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the video game company is streamlining its operations to provide deeper, more interconnected experiences for fans worldwide.
According to a filing with the SEC on Wednesday, the layoffs are intended to support EA's strategic focuses and growth ambitions. The company anticipates that the restructuring plan will be substantially completed by the end of December.
"We are optimizing our global real estate portfolio to better support our business," Wilson noted in his message on Wednesday. He added, "We are also discontinuing some game projects and will cease the development of future licensed IPs that we believe will not be successful in our evolving industry."
Wilson further explained that the reductions would allow EA to concentrate more on its "largest opportunities, including our own IP, sports games, and extensive online communities."
