IBM is carrying out layoffs in its marketing and communications department, a decision announced by Chief Communications Officer Jonathan Adashek during a roughly seven-minute meeting with employees, though the news has not yet been made public.
Previously, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna revealed to CNBC that the company was focusing on significantly enhancing all employees' AI skills and planned to replace nearly 8,000 positions with AI. Additionally, IBM announced at the beginning of last year during its earnings call that it would be cutting 3,900 positions, and stated it expects the total number of employees at the end of 2024 to remain roughly the same as at the beginning of the year.

These layoffs are part of a broader trend of job cuts within the tech industry, with 204 tech companies announcing nearly 50,000 layoffs this year. Despite IBM's return to growth in recent years, its revenue increase has been modest. To strengthen its foothold in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector, IBM launched WatsonX, a development studio aimed at helping companies "train, tune, and deploy" machine learning models. Nonetheless, IBM continues to face intense competition in the enterprise AI space from companies like Microsoft, Google, among others.
IBM CEO Krishna has admitted that the company was slow to monetize and capitalize on the commercial success of its technologies, particularly after Watson's victory on the TV show "Jeopardy." Nearly two years ago, IBM sold its Watson Health division to private equity firm Francisco Partners, marking a strategic adjustment in certain technological domains.
