Kimberly Powell, vice president of health care at Nvidia, recently said that Johnson & Johnson’s medical technology department and Nvidia plan to integrate artificial intelligence technology into medical equipment and platforms from before to after surgery. The goal of this collaboration is to use artificial intelligence technologies, such as analyzing surgical videos and automatically generating documentation required after surgery, to improve the efficiency and quality of medical services.Johnson & Johnson's medical technology unit develops tools and solutions for conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease and stroke, with technology used in more than 75 million procedures annually, while Nvidia has been investing in medical devices and imaging for more than a decade.

Shan Jegatheeswaran, vice president of MedTech at Johnson & Johnson, said that one minute of surgical video is equivalent to about 25 CT scans, so having the computing power and infrastructure to annotate and share these videos widely will be very beneficial to surgeons. In the short term, de-identified and enhanced video can help educate and train surgeons. In the long run, real-time decision support can be provided. More accessible surgical videos mean residents won’t have to rely solely on the insight and availability of more experienced physicians at their institution. Just like athletes watching game tapes, athletes will become better as time goes by. It's still early days for the Nvidia and Johnson & Johnson collaboration, and many applications will need time to be fine-tuned and securely implemented. However, non-diagnostic use cases such as automating paperwork will help save surgeons time and make a difference right away. Patients are going to be very excited, and this technology is going to become very popular among all clinicians, all hard-working nurses, all healthcare providers and become their best tool and information.
